About This Course

This online course includes the functional description of a pressurized water reactor, with a presentation of the general architecture of the nuclear plant, a more detailed presentation of the net steam supply system (NSSS) and its main components, as well as coolant loop in the reactor. The physical phenomena modifying the core reactivity balance of the heart are also explained.

In addition, this course is based on simulations which gives a global and systemic view of the nuclear facility, specially during the transient operating conditions. The simulations allow us to see the impact of regulations, physical feedback, time constants and a good understanding of the implementation of the different systems. It is also possible with the simulations to reconstruct some fundamental stages of the engineering approach which led to the fundamental choices in the design of reactors operated industrially.

Format

The course will provide description of a pressurized water reactor, with a presentation of the general architecture of the installation with numerical applications and short exercises to estimate some orders of magnitude. The course will also provide videos representing the behaviour of the nuclear reactor under different operating situations : a) Axial power distribution in PWRs ; b) Operation in free dynamics ; c) Temperature regulation ; d) Introduction to mode A piloting operation.

The current modules of the course are the following:

  1. Introduction (open in April 2020)
  2. Architecture of the Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) (open in April 2020)
  3. A main nuclear auxiliary system : the chemical and volume control system (CVCS). In conjunction with the reactor boron and water make up system (RBWMS) (open in July 2020)
  4. Conventional Island. Architecture and components. Specificities of NPP turbine room. Operating point a rated power. Thermodynamic efficiency. The water-steam cycle in the different thermodynamic diagrams (open in April 2020)
  5. Basic notions of core operation (open in April 2020)
  6. Axial distribution of power (open in July 2020)
  7. Free dynamics transients (open in April 2020)
  8. Average coolant temperature regulation (open in April 2020)
  9. Introduction to core control mode : the "A mode" (open in July 2020)

Requirements

Basic knowledge in nuclear physics. These e-learning resources complement the training programme "Basic operation of nuclear reactors" at INSTN.
